Students working at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm developed a system that interrupts a car’s music player to alert the driver of an approaching emergency vehicle. The system calles EVAM includes a radio transmission from the ambulance to the cars’ FM tuners equipped with a Radio Data System. The signal is sent from the ambulance over the FM band and a transmission of a text message that appears in the car’s tuner display. Moreover, the system can lower the music volume and send out a voice message that warns the driver. The optimal warning time is at least 10 to 15 seconds. The system also able to react to the speed of traffic. On a highway the alert will be sent earlier than in slower city traffic.
