Apps to reward people to travel sustainably

The Horizon 2020 EMPOWER Project is establishing reward systems for incentivize people to choose more sustainable modes of transportation. The developed schemes and apps are tested in LivingLabs around Europe. In a collaboration with seven what they call Take-Up Cities, they are trying out travel-smart initiatives like reward and point challenges and the utilization of social networks. An app, for instance, would set tailored objectives based on information put in about travel behavior. The reward can then be anything from a free coffee at a local café to a movie ticket being free of charge.

The city of Odense, as an example, has already made headway changing the 36 thousand daily short trips by car each day to cycling or walking by introducing 2 apps, one that turns cycling into a game for children, the other more suited towards adults.
