Audi retrofits Euro 5 & 6 cars to keep diesel engines competitive

Audi has announced that the company will be retrofitting up to 850,000 of its Euro 5 and Euro 6 diesel cars “maintain the future viability of diesel engines”. This comes after repeated calls for regulatory restrictions on high-polluting road vehicles by the public. In course of this move, Audi will offer owners of six-cylinder and eight-cylinder V6 and V8 diesel engines in markets outside of the US free software upgrades to decrease their emissions even further.

The retrofitting is supposed to counteract possible bans on vehicles with diesel engines, and will apply to some Porsche and Volkswagen models with the same types of engine as well. Recently, VW rival Daimler has started a similar initiative.
