Researchers are about to create an auditory map of New York City. About 100 sensors will be installed on the second floor of public buildings e.g. near New York University before expanding to Brooklyn and other parts of Manhatten. The microphones are acutally used for identifying bird calls. The project aims at helping the city monitor noise pollution. All sounds will be categorized by the machine-listening software “UrbanEars”. All the information will be transmitted into an app called “Urbane” which enables users to view and interact with the data. Another app could then improve upon the noise complaint by helping residents track their complaints. Furthermore the project could help to create a picture of the urban ecosystem, drawing connections between crime and noise levels.
