A team of scientists at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem developed an innovative way to detect land mines that have been buried for a long time. They engineered a new form of bacteria that sends out fluorescent signals when in contact with certain vapors that land mines eject into the ground. After the bacteria has been spread out in form of beads, a laser can scan a select area for the mines with the help of the beads. Several small problems still have to be solved for the method, but the researchers are hopeful.
