Data privacy has been an issue for students before the emergence of the internet. However issues of protection of digital data have gained relevance over the last years due to an increase of third parties handling student information. The data is not always kept within the universities premises anymore and there have been cases where these third-party providers of softwares and similar services have misused the access to student information. Universities have to find a way to make use of the opportunities of big data while not compromising on data privacy of students and staff.
