Beyond China’s renewable energy efforts

While China is regularly hitting the news concerning its economic efforts in the development and expansion of renewable energies, the political and humanitarian aspect gets less attention. About 70 million people in China are living below the poverty line. Mainly living in rural areas, the economic situation is closely linked to access to electricity. The government therefore aims to develop photovoltaics (PV) in these areas to boost economic growth. A plan released in April explains in more detail how rooftop installations in a village can be connected to form micro solar energy system. These would enable the households to not only produce electricity for their own use, but also to earn money by sending surplus energy to the grid.
