In order to fight illegal fishing Global Fishing Watch applies big data analysis enabled by satellites to observe ships on the high sea. As law enforcement is weak and legal conditions are vague, illegal fishing and modern slavery take place on vessels on the opea sea. Though figures are difficult to collect, it is estimated that one third of fish sold in the US has been caught illegally. By means of satellites, machine learning and cloud computing the organization hopes to take advantage of modern technologies for the benefit of the environment and people.
