The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has developed a “Ballistics Toolmark Research Database” to modernize the process of matching bullets with the gun that fired them. Law enforcement agencies such as the FBI provide the data. Lab technicians from the NIST examine test-fired bullets and cartridge cases, produce a high-resolution 3-D topographic surface map and generate a virtual model of the physical object.
