According to experts, data received from electronic health records, social media, and other digital data are potential sources for the effective management of infectious diseases. Big data is more efficient and provides more detailed information than traditional sources of health surveillance. Therefore it is argued that surveillance systems for public health have to be developed to make use of the advantages of big data. Rather than replacing traditional methods, the new technology is argued to become integrated in existing systems. Since big data also has its drawbacks and challenges, it will still be a long way until new technologies are adopted into health surveillance.
