BMW’s mobility services division, Woodland Park Zoo and the city of Seattle recently installed the first 20 Light and Charge electric vehicle (EV) charging locations which will more than double the present number of Fast Chargers available in Seattle. The Light & Charge system, developed by BMW and eluminocity US Inc. converts the existing street and parking lot light poles to smart city network nodes. The system’s combination of high-efficiency, LED lighting, EV charging and a sophisticated sensor bus enabling edge-computing power for other connected devices and much more was developed as a prototype system in 2014. With this infrastructure in place BMW’s ReachNow can expand its fleet as with less than a year on the road, ReachNow fleet has already saved more than 55 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
