California wants to apply to join UN climate talks. Experts at Harvard and Yale university have already done some research if there is a possibility for sub-national bodies to join the UN climate talks. However, in the end it will be a political decision. The UN convention on climate change is flexible concerning this issue and also allows non-state entities to participate. Around 10-12 US states representing 30 percent of the country’s economy oppose Trump’s plans to quit climate laws. Washington state, New York, Oregon, New England and Vermont are a few of those. 36 states have already developed climate plans and renewable energy targets.
