Can energy produced from the pressure that car put on roads play a role in future energy production? Image source: Shutterstock (#552443026) pictures highway intersection in Los Angeles.
The California Energy Commission has approved funding for two projects from The University of California, Merced and PYRO-E, LLC to show how electric power can be generated through piezoelectricity. Piezoelectricity is generated when pressure is applied to materials, the surface area of roads in these cases. Batteries close to the roads would store the energy harnessed by crystals embedded in the road.
The advantage of using freeways as an energy source is that it is does not rely on sunlight or weather to function. The two projects are in place to determine whether the technology can be cost-effective.
