Recent comments from the director of Caltrans have revealed that California’s state highway management system will be the first to change to accomodate for self-driving vehicles.
Caltrans has in fact already begun altering California’s roads to prepare for the rollout of autonomous vehicles. This will mainly be done by making it easier for the cars to navigate. For example, it is planned to go away from Botts’ Dots. Lane lines are also to be painted thicker, up from four to six inches.
To limit costs for the endeavor, it is made in conjunction with regular maintenance and construction work.
