The Southeastern nation of Cambodia has made its first major investment in solar energy. Built at a cost of $9.2 million, Combodia’s first solar-powered electricity plant is expected to be operational by August 2017 and will generate about 10 megawatts of power. The project will be developed by the Singapore-based renewable firm Sunseap and is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 5,500 tonnes of CO2 a year. Stressing the needs of sustainable energy, Frank Phuan, founder and director of Sunseap Group, said, “While electricity consumption in Cambodia has increased significantly over the years, almost half of the country’s population currently has no access to stable, affordable electricity.”
