China sophisticates underwater drones

China has unveiled and tested a fleet of 12 highly advanced underwater drones in the South China Sea. The glider drones known as Haiya are more durable and more energy efficient than previous versions, and are capable of instantly relaying underwater data to command centers.

Although statements claim the drones were deployed to collect environmental data, it is suggested that they are part of China’s ongoing effort to control the South China Sea. Potential military capabilities are speculated.
