China tackles pollution in recycling industry

The Ministry of Environmental Protection and other government agencies have launched a campaign targeting small and substandard workshops which cause heavy pollution. At the same time, legitimate recycling companies will be supported to accelerate business and standardize China’s solid waste recycling industry.

“Recycling is a good thing, but many companies cause additional pollution in the environment due to substandard operations,” explains Ma Jun, head of the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs.

The goal is to stop imports of environmentally hazardous solid waste at the end of 2017, and imports of solid waste that can be replaced by domestic resources by 2019.
