Coal mine repurposed into energy storage

In North-Rhine Westphalia, Germany, a coal mine is going to be turned into a 200-MW pumped storage hydroelectric reservoir to store excess solar and wind energy. The area will thus maintain its function as the power supplier of the region, only this time it is sustainable.

The project solves problems that come with the shift to clean energy, namely that it brings new economic activity, and that it helps maintain energy capacity during times with less wind or sun exposure. Energy storage is a great concern for Germany in their transition to clean energy, so more mines might be repurposed if the project is a success.
