The European Commission’s Communication on Europe’s data economy has been published in the framework of the EU’s Digital Single Market Strategy. Even though it is not sector-specific, it focuses on connected and automated driving. Connected and autonomous driving requires much higher standards in safety, security and privacy compared to other consumer devices. According to the ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association) Secretary General Erik Jonnaert, it is the vehicle manufacturer’s responsibility that the vehicle operates safely and securely. The Communication’s references provide clear rules on access to data, as well as security, privacy and liability concerns.
