The Athens-based art group Communitism devoted itself to the restoration of one of the city’s historic neighborhoods: Metaxourgeio. The goal is to revive the buildings for community use which have been neglected by the city’s authorities. By engaging people from different sectors, the group hopes to save the houses which are of special architectural value. At the same time the revival could improve the area’s reputation for poor security. While the group is aware of possible gentrification as a result of their work, only time will tell if they manage to ensure continuous service for the community.
