An innovative solar incentive program is incorporating both solar electricity production and blockchain technology to incentivize the generation of solar energy with a global solar rewards program. This reward comes in the form of SolarCoin, a cryptocurrency like Bitcoin.
As of today, the program has rewarded more than 10,000 solar installations for their electricity generation since its start in 2014. “SolarCoin is like airmiles for global solar electricity producers,” says Joseph Zitoli of The SolarCoin Foundation. With 34 million SolarCoins in circulation already, and 5,000 being added per week, SuperCoin could change the face of solar energy.
Lumo and TheSunExchange, solar-focused crowdfunding platforms, are incorporating SolarCoin, Smappee of Belgium has the cryptocurrency listed as a feature, and recently, ekWateur became the first energy company to accept SolarCoin as payment.
