A group of researchers around Yang Yang from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, in Washington State, US, studied simulated wind and dust patterns over eastern China of 150 years, and found that when winds were less prevalent, more solar radiation reached the surface, resulting in a build-up of pollutants produced by people.

As hundreds of millions of people suffer from respiratory problems, and 17% of mortalities in China can be attributed to dirty air, these findings could help understand how to better work towards cleaner air in the country.
