Detroit lets citizens take charge in smart city efforts

A new innovative smart city project in Detroit called Sensors in a Shoebox lets citizens gather their own data with smart sensors. Enabling kids to come up with their own solutions with compact kits of sensors, the bottom-up approach to urban technology aims to empower the community.

“The real goal of this project is to engage young people in identifying problems in their community and learning to do scientific research to work on solutions,” says Elizabeth Moje, dean of Michigan’s School of Education and a lead researcher for Sensors in a Shoebox.

The project is funded by grants from the Knight Cities Challenge and the National Science Foundation. The sensor technology is based on the Narada node by Jerry Lynch.
