Digital classrooms for better education in Kenya

Kenya is a country where the digital gap is vast in terms of education. Even though the largest economy in eastern Africa spends twice as much money per student as the average developing country, there is only one primary teacher for every 47 students. The majority of them does not have access to computers or the internet, only a third has access. More and more companies have established trying to bring education into the digital era by scanning textbooks, developing bite-sized courses for mobile phones and providing tablets. Many schoold suffer from regular power outages which makes it difficult to charge devices. BRCk, for example, is a Nairobi tech company has developed the Kio Kit which is a digital classroom that includes a wifi hotspot, a small server packed with educational content and 40 tablets than can be charges wirelessly. The new digital education companies do not only provide technical equipment, they also emphasize teacher training because the technology alone does not improve education.
