Drones use Wi-Fi to see through walls

A team of researchers at the University of California in Santa Barbara has developed a system that lets two drones work together to generate a detailed image of objects through obstacles such as walls with the help of Wi-Fi RSSI measurements. One drone transmits the signal, the other ohne measures the spacial discrepancies. All this is possible with off-the-shelf technology and might useful in a lot of different areas.

“There are several potential applications, such as emergency response, archeological discovery, and structural health monitoring, that can benefit from obtaining a high-resolution 3D image of an unknown area through walls with everyday Wi-Fi signals,” Yasamin Mostofi, head of the team, says.
