Electrical equipment giant Eaton is currently in a trial run of their energy management circuit breaker (EMCB), circuit breakers with features like wireless connectivity and computing power. In a collaboration with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), they are evaluating the capabilities of the deployed devices for tracking the interplay of grid-supplied power and on-site distributed energy resources.
Come 2018 Eaton and the EPRI will have enough data to tell whether the increased incremental value of the smart circuit breakers is worth the higher up-front cost.
