Eco-friendly homes for Indonesia’s migrant farmers

Since Indonesia’s cities are the fastest growing ones in Asia, it is no surprise that the expansion and development infrastructure is lagging behind. In order to cope with a growing demand for housing, a team of students of the Technology University of Yogyakarta propose the “Vertical Farm Acupuncture” (ViFA). For this project, the team received the first prize of the International Tropical Architecture Design Competition. The 11-storey building is made of waste plastic, glass bottles and recycled building materials. Further it incorporates a water harvesting system and space for urban gardening. ViFA is designed with the needs of the urban poor in mind.
