The latest sales figures released by the government and the industry-backed Go Ultra Low campaign show record numbers of new registrations during the first half of 2017. After cuts for subsidies last year, the market slowed down, but that proved to be short-lived. Demand from private buyers is continuing to grow strongly.
In the UK alone, 22,480 plug-in cars were registered from January on, an increase of 14.3 percent on last year. June even exceeded all non-plate-change months with 4,405 new plug-in models sold. That is 33 percent more than the same month in 2016. Further growth is anticipated because more businesses and fleet operators are looking to benefit from the long term fuel cost savings that result from switching to EVs.
The model that is topping the sales charts is the Nissan LEAF while BMW’s plug-in hybrid 3-Series recorded the most growth.
