A movement is beginning to mobilize around Europe to call for halving Europe’s food waste by 2030. The “This is Rubbish” initiative in collaboration with Friends of Earth has started a petition to summon Europe to reduce its food waste. Already 19 organisations from across the continent have backed the statement calling the European Parliament for action. An estimated 88 million tonnes of food are thrown away throughout Europe. The environmental impact is globally devastating. 28 percent of the world’s agricultural land is used for food that is wasted. At the same time more agricultural land is demanded globally which leads to deforestation and erosion of biodiversity as well as the destruction of rainforests and habitats worldwide.
