Eviction of slum in the name of smart city development?

1,500 people have been evicted from Charan Khad, a slum in the Indian city of Dharamshala. According to the local municipality, the measures were necessary because of an open defecation. Others however claim that the eviction was in the name of the “Smart City” project that was initiated by the central Indian government in cooperation with the UNDP. The initiative aims at developing urban areas throughout India with the application of new technology. The defecation problem is further argued that it could have been solved with the provision of sanitation facilities. The 1,500 people did not receive any compensation so far.
