Last Friday, the British National Grid reported the first working day energy generated from coal was not needed since the Industrial Revolution. With West Burton 1 power station, the only coal-fired plant that had been operational, going offline the day before, this marks a milestone for green energy.
Coal was responsible for 23% of energy generation in the UK in 2015, and only 9% last year. With this trend persisting, the government’s plan to phase out fossil fuel to stick to the climate change commitments is well underway.
