Air quality alerts due to high pollution levels have been proclaimed in London for the first time. They are displayed at 2500 bus stops and at the entrances of all 270 subway stations. Signs next to the busiest main roads instruct drivers to switch engines off when stationary. The repercussions of high pollution are sore eyes and throat or cough. People affected by these symptoms are advised to reduce their outdoor activities.
