Florence, Italy, wants to prioritize public safety without turning the design of public spaces too militant. In many cities in Europe hit by terrorist attacks, checkpoints and metal bollards have changed the face of public spaces. Mayor Dario Nardella has now announced that a proposal to use trees and planters as barriers will be implemented.
“The safety of these places is urgent and appropriate, but we cannot allow safety to transform thousands of squares and public spaces in Europe to become sites of barriers and concrete blocks, as if they were military checkpoints,” architect Stefan Boeri said in a statement.
Other street furniture such as benches and bicycle racks could be utilized as well.
