The Irish social start-up “FoodCloud” developed an app that informs charities when businesses have a surplus of food available. Thus food waste is tackled. FoodCloud is a non profit-making enterprise. Retailers pay a fee for the service but all the money is invested in covering operational costs. To use the app, the retailer just uploads details of what is available to the app. Charities receive the information and can pick up the surplus food at an appointed time.
