Will fossil fuels still cover most energy demand by 2035? Image source: Shutterstock (#226073734) pictures coal burning power plant.
The recently published BP Energy Outlook 2017 forecasts that the global demand for energy will increase by about 30 percent between 2015 and 2035. That is an average growth of 1,3 percent per year. The growth in energy demand is lower than the 3,4 percent rise expected in global GDP. It is an evidence for the improved energy efficiency which is driven by technology improvements and concerns. Non-fossil fuels are expected to account for half of the growth in energy supplies over the next 20 year. According to the BP Outlook, oil, gas and coal still remain the main sources of energy accounting for more than 75 percent of the total energy supply in 2035. In 2015 the 86 percent of the total energy demand was supplied by those fossil fuels.
