The German city of Frankfurt has been working to reduce its carbon emissions for some years. In 2013 Frankfurt started its low-carbon vision with its “Masterplan 100 percent Climate Protection”. Citizens and energy institutions were engaged. The plan aims at cutting the energy use in half and only use renewables as an energy source by 2050. 50 percent of the city’s renewable energy is produced from rooftop solar panels and waste. The other half is imported from the surrounding area. As a result of these processes many of its buildings already meet energy efficiency standards. Citizens, schools and businesses are encouraged to save energy.
