Will Aarhus become the first energy-neutral catchment area?

Aarhus, a city in Danmark, is about to run its water supplies on energy generated from sewage. Improvements at the Marselisborg Wastewater Treatment Plant will provide 150 percent of the energy that the plant needs for its own operations. The remaining 50 percent will be used to pump fresh water around the city. Biogas from household waste water is burned in the plant to generate heat and electricity. Though the technology is not new, its success in Aarhus is due to a combination of public policies, regulations and supporting infrastructure.  The technology helps to become more energy efficient and sustainable and other cities are about to copy it.
