Germany could make massive progress towards its commitment under the Paris climate accords with the closing of several coal power plants. Some political parties have warned that this could endanger the country’s electrical supply and result in energy shortages, but a report by Agora Energiewende now claims that this would not be the case.
“The shutdown of coal power plants would not make Germany dependent on electricity imports. It would only have to reduce its electricity exports,” Agora director Patrick Graiche said. Only shutting down lignite facilities would already bring the country halfway to its carbon reduction goals.
