The German government pledged to invest 20 million euros to build a recycling facility for electronic waste in Accra, Ghana. Local group City Waste Management is happy to cooperate to reduce health risks for workers as the burning of e-waste produces hazardous smoke that not only pollutes the atmosphere, but also lakes and rivers. A dedicated health station is part of the plans as well. Locals will be able to buy and sell e-waste at the facility, where it will be processed considerably safer than before.

According to the UN Environment Program (UNEP), 60 to 90 percent of electronic waste in the world is still being illegally thrown away.
