A British farmer has not only installed solar panels on his property but he has also deployed a 40-foot-long shipping container filled with 200 lithium-ion cells that make up a battery large enough to store the electricity the solar farm produces. The energy supply in the UK is often subject to price fluctuations. When the price is high the grid can be fed by the stored energy. The farmer even plans to enter an auction to become a standby source of power when it comes to imbalances or unexpected drops in the grid. Batteries are one way of achieving that flexibility. The greatest advantage is that the electronic controls allow to react almost instantly to needs of the electricity grid.
