The awards-winnning “The Edge” is a business tower in Amsterdam that aims at making the staff happy and productive by design. 20,000 sensors help to adjust cleaning, lighting and heating so employees feel comfortable. With one in six 25 to 35-year old workers suffering from burnout in the Netherlands, the building is a response and experiment at the same time to see how employees’ well-being can be improved with a conscious design of the work environment. Absent rates of staff in The Edge actually dropped. Responsible for the design was the Amsterdam-based design studio D/DOCK which focused on bringing in certain aspects such as nature, daylight, healthy food, physical activity, healthy food and diversity, that are believed to support productivity and mental well-being.
