US state Illinois is establishing a statewide agency to make its cities smarter. Its purpose will be to monitor investments for smart city initiatives such as construction of urban mobility systems or data analysis software for air quality or pedestrian traffic behavior. Priorities include adding IoT technology to buildings and streetlights, adopting standard policies for smart city projects, and improving state-specific mobile services.
Although progress for a whole state might be slower than for individual cities, the movement wants to show that the role of the state is vital in providing better coverage for data collection, and networking between different communities. A similar project is already underway in Texas.
