Following our visit of the Geneva Motor Show on March 7 and 8, 2017, we would like to share the most interesting car concepts with you on SmartCityNews.global. Urban solutions have been rare (e.g. smart ForTwo and ForTwo Cabrio Electric Drive, Rinspeed’s Oasis Concept, Toyota’s great i-trail concept) and autonomous driving seems to be an issue of the distant future. Mercedes-Benz showed the ConceptEQ and Peugeot surprised the visitors with the concept “instinct”. Several VR demonstrators gave some insights regarding future mobility, but appeared quite uninspired compared to what we have seen during the CES 2017 in Las Vegas. A nice trip and setting was provided by the Volkswagen demonstrator. BMW made some tough statements concerning the i-next: the car in the segment of the BMW 5-series will be launched 2021, and is planned to come fully automated in certain contexts.
A fuel cell study came from Hyundai with the i30 while Toyota showed its Mirai in the probably most beautiful pink of the show. Chrysler spoke about its new mighty appealing design language without addressing urban or autonomous mobility, and Tata made us curious with Tamo, a small sports car with an Italian design for around 50k euro. By the way: we hope to see some more (city) concepts from Tamo during the next shows. As every year, the Geneva Motor Show has been a nice event with a beautiful setting and good food during the breaks. From our perspective, the most inspiring urban mobility concept in Geneva has been Rinspeed’s Oasis (launched during the CES 2017), even though it is still far from what we see as relevant for future mobility.
