The Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) in Finland is known for its research on countries’ abilities to go 100 per cent renewable and be independent of fossil fuels. Earlier this week, LUT published a report claiming, India could join the ranks of countries that have the ability to function entirely on a 100% renewable electricity system by 2050. An interesting aspect of LUT research is the conclusion that developing countries which have an abundance of renewable energy resources could possibly avoid the Western method of increasing living standards while relying on fossil fuel-heavy energy generation sources. For a long time, researchers saw a threat of development in the rising fossil-fuel generated energy demand, however, India and other developing countries are in a position to skip this and head right to an emission-free future.
