Industry 4.0: What makes a factory smart

Manufacturing is changing. Robots, self-organizing production, augmented reality and 3D printing are at the center of this change. The change is driven by data, mass customization, predictive maintenance and products-to-services. All this is combined in smart factories. A smart factory is defined by its level of connectivity. In those factories processes are fully digitized and connected. It is not limited to automation of a single production facility and incorporates integration across core functions (production, materials, sourcing, supply chain and warehousing to sale). The number of companies that have adopted smart factory technology is growing but they are still hesitant. Many of them have invested in already existing machinery that work for years or they are afraid of security breaches and concerned about too little standardization.
