Scientists at the Lappeenranta University of Technology and the VTT Technical Research Center in Finland have developed a new process that creates protein using just electricity and carbon dioxide from the air. Although it takes two weeks to produce one gram of protein right now, the team is optimistic they can scale up the process and scale down the costs.
If they succeed, that would mean that people could feed from electricity from solar or other renewable energy sources, with a process 10 times more energy efficient than photosynthesis. No fertilizer, no animal waste, no deforestation, no emissions.
The research is part of the Neo-Carbon Energy project funded by the Academy of Finland.
