During the 13th Council of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Abu Dhabi, a report was released on employment figures in the renewable energy sector. “Renewable Energy and Jobs — Annual Review 2017” reveals jobs in the field have climbed from 8.3 to 9.8 million globally in 2016.
“IRENA has provided this year a more complete picture on the state of employment in the renewables sector, by including large hydropower data. It is important to recognize these additional 1.5 million working people, as they represent the largest renewable energy technology by installed capacity,” said Rabia Ferroukhi, head of IRENA’s Policy Unit and deputy director of Knowledge, Policy and Finance.
The report indicates that investments into renewable energy and energy efficiency could save the global economy US$19 trillion by 2050.
Leading employment in renewable energy are China, Brazil, the U.S., India, Japan and Germany.
