At the rooftop of Israel’s oldest mall in Tel Aviv a huge urban farm called “Green in the City” produces 10,000 heads of leafy greens with 17 different kinds of vegetables and herbs inside two greenhouses a month using organic and hydroponic methods. The farm is not the only sustainable initiative at the Dizengoff Center shopping mall. A bird habitat, a tree nursery, a rooftop apiary and a bat cave for native fruit bats can also be found there. The urban agriculture project is supposed to raise public awareness about the food crisis and provide tools for the residents to start hydroponic gardens at home.
