Japan ratified the Paris Climate Agreement today, four days after the global agreement entered into force. The delay could limit Japan’s ability to influence negotiations on the details and implementation at the COP22 meeting in Morocco. According to Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Japan aims to play a leading role in terms of arrangements that raise transparency in emission cuts. Recently the country has been criticised for planning to open scores of new coal-fired power plants and pushing burning power technology abroad.
