Kansas City has been a leader in big data and smart city technology for a while, but is now reaching an inflection point to leverage that data. “The bottom line is that now we are able to go from using data to ease making decision to now using data to help make effective predictions so that the city can be better postured for the future,” Bob Bennett, chief innovation officer at the City of Kansas City, said during the Smart City Advisory Board meeting.

The smart strip in downtown Kansas City is a 15.7 million public-private project and a collaboration between Kansas City, Sprint, Cisco and Think Big Partners. Since last year, 328 WiFi access points, 178 smart lighting video nodes and 25 smart kiosks, have been implemented to lay the foundation of a smart city infrastructure.

Now, the Living Lab, a platform for innovators to create solutions within the smart city framework, is being launched to both attract new solutions to persistent city problems and to be able to test and commercialize technology relevant to the public.
